The Health & Safety at Work Act ( 1974 ) places an obligation on employees where appliances are used, on the public where they may use appliances in places such as Hotels, Hostels, Schools, Shops etc. Where appliances are supplied or hired and where appliances are serviced & repaired. This requires a systematic regular programme of maintenance, inspection & testing of Portable Appliances.

What appliances need to be tested?

An electrical appliance is classed as "portable" if under 18kg and connected to the mains by way of a lead and plug. All portable appliances in Building and Constuction must be tested.

What do the tests involve?

The testing consists of two separate activities; a visual inspection to check for damage and poor electrical standards and a series of instrument tests to check for less obvious electrical faults.

How often should these tests be carried out?

In Building and Constuction an electric drill getting heavy use the testing cycle would be every 6 months.
